KASHMIR (Updated)
Today, 5 August 2019 has become a historic day in our history as something which could not be done in 70 years has taken shape now. Union Home minister Amit Shah has announced that Article 370 which grants special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be scrapped. He also announced that Jammu and Kashmir will no longer be a state and it will be bifurcated into two Union Territories— Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.  mehr lesen...mehr lesen...
WITHERING AWAY OF CONGRESS PARTY
Is ours an ideal democracy!! Hardly so, it is far from being an ideal democracy; where there should be  two equal opponents, like Conservative and Labour party in Britain; like Republican and Democratic party in USA. As for India, for the two major parties here i.e. Congress and BJP there has never been a state of relative equilibrium. There was a time when Congress was all powerful for a long time, BJP had not come into existence then. BJP came into existence and gradually spread its wings and the status now of present election result on 23 May 2019 is that BJP alone bagged 303 seats and 353 seats along with its NDA Alliance. Congress on the other hand could muster only 52 seats; along with UPA, Congress got 91. Other parties won 98 seats. What to talk of equality, Congress party could not win even 55 seats which is the requisite 10 % to become the official opposition. mehr lesen...mehr lesen...

MOHAMMED ALI - THE GREATEST SPORTSMAN?

“It’s one thing to be a marcher at a symbolic rally,” civil rights leader Jesse Jackson told CNN on Saturday, “[But] he lost of all of his wealth, he almost became a pauper, [going] school to school giving speeches because he’d gave it all up for his principles. That made him a very different guy.” All the racist harangues, the “white man is the devil” – that was the Nation’s ideology and he became its most vocal mouthpiece. He was coached by the Nation. ”https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/jun/ 05/shunned-by-white-america-how-muhammad-ali-found-his-voice-on-campus-tour
-------------------------
Mohammad Ali was not merely a great boxer but much more than that as he resembled India’s freedom fighters of pre Independence India and modern India’s spirited and principled activists. To call him a great boxer is to ignore the other facets of his personality showing him to be proud anti white agitator. Remember the British days in India when in some places, clubs and restaurants where only white men were allowed. Sixties of the last century witnessed a revolution like situation in USA when African Americans asserted their presence strongly, carried out their protest marches with Martin Luther King Jr., a mahatma who followed the Mahatma Gandhi model of agitation in USA and was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 became a respected figure in the world, the same year in which few months earlier Cassius Clay (later known as Mohammad Ali) won boxing championship in the Olympics, went to restaurant where the white waitress refused to serve him as he was a black man! That incident turned him into an activist, made him anti-white, seek conversion to Islam. As a strong man of principles he suffered for his principles after even winning world boxing championship by defeating Liston, refusing to join the Vietnam war, was stripped of his title and for three years banned even from participating in boxing bouts.

Indian newspapers and even television channels repeated parrot like what the US press said at the death of Mohammad Ali the boxer that he was the greatest sportsman. No one elaborated it and no one gave any cogent arguments to convince a sports lover like me why he was the greatest sportsman. I remember him always as a great proud African American refusing to get enlisted for the Vietnam war with arguments which have hurt the racist white men. He had written then “Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality...If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’II go to jail, so what? we’ve been in jail for 200 years.”

Mass Game
If one is to decide who was the greatest sportsman generally one should choose a game which has a mass following all over the world is one argument and therefore football should be the game to produce the greatest sportsman and Pele of Brazil should be the choice. Those who like Mardona more may even argue in his favor while the present generation will argue for Ronaldo or Messi.

Popular Games
If popular games limited to some nations is the area from where we are to choose the greatest sportsman, it will have to have Dhyan Chand in hockey or Bradman in cricket or Rod Laver or Roger Federer in tennis.

Maximum Achievements
If maximum achievements is the criteria to decide the greatest sportsman it has to be according to me Lin Dan, the badminton player of China.

From Wikepedia
”He is a two-time Olympic champion, five-time world champion, and six-time All England champion. Considered by many to be the greatest singles player of all time, by the age of 28 Lin had completed the "Super Grand Slam", having won all nine major titles in the badminton world: Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup, Super Series Masters Finals, All England Open, Asian Games, and Asian Championships, becoming the first and only player to achieve this feat. He also became the first men's singles player to retain the Olympic gold medal by winning in 2008 and defending his title in 2012.”

Games of Skill
Were we to choose from games of skill, indoor but totally cerebral, one will have to choose from the game of chess and the vote will go to Gary Kasparov. From Wikipedia:
“Garry Kasparov is a Russian chess Grandmaster, former World Chess Champion, writer, and political activist, considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time. From 1986 until his retirement in 2005, Kasparov was ranked world No. 1 for 225 out of 228 months. His peak rating of 2851, achieved in 1999, was the highest recorded until being surpassed by Magnus Carlsen in 2013. Kasparov also holds records for consecutive professional tournament victories and Chess Oscars “

Overlooking all these superior claims why has Mohammad Ali been called the greatest sportsman ? The reasons are two unconvincing ones: he attacked his opponents and the racist USA in the poetic form of doggerel and he created a sensation when he converted into a Muslim pretending to have shed his Christian slavish origin. He did become very popular in the Muslim world and Indian Muslims talked about him tirelessly.

What is Boxing ?
“While people have fought in hand-to-hand combat since before the dawn of history, the origin of boxing as an organized sport may be its acceptance by the ancient Greeks as an Olympic game in BC 688. Boxing evolved from 16th- and 18th-century prizefights, largely in Great Britain, to the forerunner of modern boxing in the mid-19th century, again initially in Great Britain and later in the United States. Boxing was a popular spectator sport in Ancient Rome. In order for the fighters to protect themselves against their opponents they wrapped leather thongs around their fists. Eventually harder leather was used and the thong soon became a weapon. The Romans even introduced metal studs to the thongs to make the cestus which then led to a more sinister weapon called the myrmex ('limb piercer'). Fighting events were held at Roman Amphitheatres. The Roman form of boxing was often a fight until death to please the spectators who gathered at such events. ( From Wikipedia)

Boxing duels are not fought till death now but it is bloody enough to appear brutal and uncivilized is the opinion of many parents who do not encourage their children to take to it as a sports.

WAS MUHAMMAD ALI GREATEST SPORTSMAN OR THE MOST FAMOUS SPORTSMAN IS A SOUND DEBATABLE POINT. He was noticed most because of rhetorical excesses and exuberance like Bernard Shaw’s criticism of Shakspeare. All these are strategies to remain in news, not claims to greatness which they never can be. On the other hand Mohammad Ali’s sexual side takes away the sheen of his personality and his great reputation.

Now see the Hindu Annual horoscope for the years 1963 and 1964. 1963 will be remembered in US history as a chapter resembling a chapter of India’s freedom struggle against British imperialists. The black African Americans took to agitations, in a non violent way, resembling satyagraha of Gandhian days in Indian history of freedom struggle. See the Hindu New Year horoscope of the year and the Saturn-Mars mutual opposition along the four-ten axis.

1964 was the year of two great achievements for African Americans, Cassius Clay winning the world . But the agitations of African Americans under the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr were intense and could not be ignored. See the concentration of planets in the sixth house along with the sixth lord.

Among African Americans, Martin Luther King junior was a great man--a Mahatma. 1964 was an epoch making period in the history of USA when two African Americans became world figures, Martin Luther King junior for winning Nobel Peace Prize and Cassius Clay later converted into a Muslim and named Mohammad Ali for winning world championship in boxing against all predictions.

Mohammad Ali is to be praised for transcending boxing and hurting the racist white man and his ego, standing proudly for his race the black man, the “nigger”, descendant of the slaves bought from the notorious English traders during the days of slave trade. The white men of UK and USA who talk of liberties and religious freedom of other countries should look at their disgraceful history before commenting on it. Nothing has changed even now as the website Salon.com should be read to know what is happening in USA even now and analyze BREXIT to understand who racist white men voted for on 23 Jun 2016 for EXIT not REMAIN in the European Union.

After having his bike stolen, a 12-year-old Clay promises to "whup whoever stole it." In an attempt to channel his aggression, the policeman he reported the crime to takes him under his wing and eventually directs him to boxing trainer Fred Stoner. Over the next six years, Clay would win six Kentucky Golden Gloves championships, two national Golden Gloves titles, and two AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) crowns.

Clay wins the light-heavyweight gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Rome with a 5– 0 decision over Poland's Zbigniew Pietrzykowski.

Upon returning to his native Louisville, Clay finds he's not immune to the racism that is so prevalent in the U.S. After being refused service by a waitress at a "whites-only" restaurant, and then fighting with a white gang, a disgusted Clay throws his gold medal into the Ohio River. He turns professional and wins the first two fights of his career.

Despite an unblemished 19–0 record, Clay is a heavy underdog in his championship bout with Sonny Liston. But you wouldn't know it by listening to him. He brashly and colorfully predicts victory, and teases the champ by calling him, among other things, an "ugly, old bear."

True to his word, Clay has his way with Liston through six rounds. When Liston refuses to leave his corner for the start of the seventh, the fight ends and Clay becomes heavyweight champion of the world. After the fight, Clay announces he has become a Black Muslim and has changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

1967 (Rahu Sun)
In April, Ali refuses induction into the U.S. Army due to his religious convictions. He angers many Americans after claiming, "I ain't got no quarrel with those Vietcong." He is subsequently stripped of his WBA title and his license to fight.
In June, a court finds him guilty of draft evasion, fines him $10,000, and sentences him to five years in prison. He remains free, pending numerous appeals, but is still barred from fighting.

1970
Due to a loophole (there was no state boxing commission in Georgia), Ali returns to the ring in Atlanta and knocks out Jerry Quarry in three rounds.

1971 (Jup-Jup)
In March, he fights heavyweight champ Joe Frazier in Madison Square Garden. A left hook by Frazier knocks Ali down in the 15th round. Frazier wins by unanimous decision. Three months later, the Supreme Court rules in his favor, reversing the 1967 draft-evasion conviction.

1974 (Jup-Mer)
In January, he gains a measure of revenge from Frazier, besting the former champ in 12 rounds. Regains the heavyweight title in the "Rumble in the Jungle" on Oct. 30 in Kinshasa, Zaire after knocking out champion George Foreman in the eighth round. He successfully uses his "rope-a-dope" strategy—Ali allowed Foreman to get him against the ropes and swing away until he tired himself out. Then Ali attacked.

1975 (Jup-Mer) Ali fights Frazier for the third time at the "Thrilla in Manila" in the Philip-pines. The two heavyweights batter and bloody each other in a ferocious battle, but Ali retains his belt when Frazier can't come out for the 15th round.

1978 ( Jup-Ven) With a career record of 55–2, an overconfident Ali loses his belt to 1976 Olympic champ Leon Spinks in a 15-round split decision. Spinks' reign as champ is brief, however, as Ali wins back the title in a unanimous decision seven months later.

1979 ( Jup-Ven) Announces his retirement on June 27.

1980 ( Jup-Sun)
Comes out of retirement to fight new heavyweight champ Larry Holmes. Holmes punishes Ali, landing an estimated 125 punches in the ninth and tenth rounds alone, and then knocks him out in the 11th.

1981 (Jup Moon) Loses a unanimous decision to Trevor Berbick, and finally hangs up the gloves for good, retiring with an overall professional record of 56—5.

1984 (Jup-Rahu) Dasha Chiddra) Ali is
diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a neurological disorder whose symptoms include  muscle tremors and slowness of speech.

1996 (Sat-Sun) Ali carries the Olympic torch and ignites the cauldron to signal the beginning of the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He is also given a second gold medal, to replace the one he tossed in the river 36 years earlier.

Death 4 June 2016 in Mercury Rahu
To call Mohammad Ali the greatest sportsman is to ignore that sports must not be bloody and give delight to spectators. Mohammad Ali was a well known figure and that is the result of the usual American habit of exaggerating its achievers as they have done many times before. In the case of Jean Dixon to call her the greatest psychic was a joke compared to thousands of Indian seers about whom we do not write. I have met many such women and men with supernormal powers who predict in one hour what Jean Dixon could not predict in one month. Then the accurate predictions of Dixon are so few in a long span of her life and writing career.

Advertising, for commercial purposes, the US habit, gives exaggerated importance to many Americans and in this list is included Mohammad Ali. The truly great African American was Martin Luther King Jr. , a mahatma in the truest sense of the term. Yet, both Mohammad Ali and Martin Luther King jn achieved nothing worthwhile in US life if the discrimination against the African Americans are watched.

Here is a piece from a US newspaper” The Washington Post

1996-2016 The Washington Post
Fatal shootings by police are up in the first six months of 2016, Post analysis finds -
By Kimberly Kindy, Wesley Lowery, Steven Rich, Julie Tate and Jennifer Jenkins - July 7
As the use of deadly force by police once again roils the nation, the number of fatalshootings by officers has increased from 465 in the first six months of last year to 491 for the same period this year, according to an ongoing two-year study by The Washington Post. This year has also seen more officers shot and killed in the line of duty and more officers prosecuted for questionable shootings.

Two years after a white police officer shot and killed a black teenager in Ferguson, Mo., the pace of fatal shootings has risen slightly while the grim encounters are increas-ingly being captured on video and stoking outrage.”
