KASHMIR (Updated)
Today, 5 August 2019 has become a historic day in our history as something which could not be done in 70 years has taken shape now. Union Home minister Amit Shah has announced that Article 370 which grants special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be scrapped. He also announced that Jammu and Kashmir will no longer be a state and it will be bifurcated into two Union Territories— Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.  mehr lesen...mehr lesen...
WITHERING AWAY OF CONGRESS PARTY
Is ours an ideal democracy!! Hardly so, it is far from being an ideal democracy; where there should be  two equal opponents, like Conservative and Labour party in Britain; like Republican and Democratic party in USA. As for India, for the two major parties here i.e. Congress and BJP there has never been a state of relative equilibrium. There was a time when Congress was all powerful for a long time, BJP had not come into existence then. BJP came into existence and gradually spread its wings and the status now of present election result on 23 May 2019 is that BJP alone bagged 303 seats and 353 seats along with its NDA Alliance. Congress on the other hand could muster only 52 seats; along with UPA, Congress got 91. Other parties won 98 seats. What to talk of equality, Congress party could not win even 55 seats which is the requisite 10 % to become the official opposition. mehr lesen...mehr lesen...

RIO REGRETS AND INDIAN INDIGNATION

More than a decade ago, an IAS officer, an astrology student of ours, asked me to see the horoscope of his son a Ranji trophy player of his state. I advised him to ask his son to concentrate on his studies and make a career, mostly likely in a bank. That boy is now a bank officer and the father is a relieved man.

Nearly one year ago, in teaching about hobbies as seen astrologically I advised students never to encourage their children to think even of taking to sports as a career as in India only a few hundreds can earn out of games for a life time and that too in cricket, badminton and tennis from the prize money they get, while others fail in their education and also in sports field ending up miserably. Then think of past medal winners of India in international events living miserably in middle age and even selling off their medals to survive.

In India we do not have any sports culture sports policy though we do see stupid anchors of television channels uttering inanities in their so called coverage of sports, mainly cricket, with some women anchors doing it raucously and vociferously with glaring ignorance. Then we have sports correspondents of Indian newspapers who do not seem to know much about athletics and other games, other than cricket. Having played more than twelve games, written about them both in English and Hindi with good knowledge, I can say so with confidence. We have had sports ministers at the center who will not understand a joke if you were to tell them that a hockey player has scored 200 runs or that a goal keeper of football dived in the gully and caught a snick from a cricketer’s bat .

Look at some of these ministers at the center. Mamata Banerjee (1991 – 1993) an agitator and politician.

- Uma Bharti (7 November 2000 – 25 August 2002)
- Sunil Dutt (2004 – 2005) an agitator and politician.
- M. S. Gill (28 May 2009 – 18 January 2011) a retired bureaucrat whom Manmohan Singh made a minister after he crossed his seventieth year.
- Ajay Maken (19 January 2011 – 28 October 2012) a politician not known for any sporting career.
- Jitendra Singh (29 October 2012 – 25 May 2014)a politician not known for any sporting career.
- Sarbananda Sonowal (20 May 2014 – 23 May 2016) a politician not known for any sporting career. a politician not known for any sporting career.

No prime minister ever thought of taking the services of Milka Singh ( athletics) Dhanraj Pillai (hockey) , Sachin Tendulkar (cricket) , Lieutenant-Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (shooting) or Prakash Padukone or Gopinath (badminton) in a board with wide powers to promote sports in India and come out with a policy of looking after distinguished sportsmen after their retirement.

Then with our huge population, with builders occupying all available land for their profits, with no playing grounds being available, do we expect our young men to become distinguished sportsmen ? We do have many cricket coaching centres, some badminton and tennis coaching centers for the children of rich or well to do families.

So if till today (15th August) in the Rio Olympics India has not won a single medal in a list of more than sixty countries, some of them smaller than the state of Haryana, was it not expected ? Some of the countries from bottom (SOUTH AFRICA, SWEDEN, DENMARK, NORTH KOREA, BRAZIL, BELARUS, KENYA,CUBA, POLAND, ROMANIA, SLOVENIA, ARGENTINA, SLOVAKIA, VIETNAM,CZECH REPUBLIC, UZBEKISTAN, ETHIOPIA, CHINESE TAIPEI, GREECE, FIJI,) have one or two medals against their names and India has none !! ( as on 15 August). India’s best performance was in 2012 when it won six medals in all, two silver and four bronze. With such a poor record and with no visible promise of our sports scenario ever improving, will you advise your children to take to sports and athletics as a career ?

On the other hand enjoy the performance of Africans of different countries. They were all Africans, eight of them in eight lanes in the 100 meters finals of Rio Olympics and it was difficult to decide whose African-- I mean which country’s African, was the best---and it was Usain Bolt.

Rio Olympics: Dipa Karmakar wins hearts, India still medalless
===================================

They of the other countries capture gold, silver and bronze medals. Some Indians hovering in the vicinity of bronze medals slip out of the race, each in his or her own way. Two much talked of “S”s of India, Sania and Saina, were to get us two consolation bronze medals but they flopped what ever the reason or excuse.

In the sentimental inanities uttered by television commentators of India , in Hindi, there is more maudlin pathos than sound knowledge of the event taking place.

Giving some competition to there Africans are some white skinned athletes from erstwhile Republics of former USSR. Add to the list athletes with Mongolian features with China pre-domination and the story of these competitions of Olympics is complete.

While in these competitions Indians were getting routed, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was thundering out his speech from the Red Fort on 15 August referring to the great Bheema of the Mahabharata. “ From Vedas to Vivekananda, from Sudarshan Chakradhari Mohan to Chakradhari Mohan, from Bheema of the Mahab-harata to Bheema Rao we have a long legacy”.

I switched over to see the Brazil vs Russia women’s basket ball match and the shrieks of the women participants and thought that I would differ from the latest research of an English woman that both men and women are from Mars, not women from Venus and men from Mars. For a compromise let us agree that women are from a planet between Mars and Venus.

I have followed Olympics since 1948 and even before the Indian contingent moves out of India I expect them to return with one or two or even no medals.

Men's Hockey: 3-1 to Belgium

NEW DELHI: A day that promised so much ended with emptiness. India's search for a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics continues following the defeat of the mixed doubles' tennis pair of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the bronze medal play-off match, the men's hockey team's loss to Belgium in the quarter-finals and the surprise exit of Saina Nehwal on Sunday.

India can raise a toast, however, to 22-year-old gymnast Dipa Karmakar who finished fourth in the vault final with a score of 15.006 - well past her previous best - and missed a bronze medal by 0.150 points. Dipa was at second place after her second attempt at the Produnova but slipped to fourth after the final contestant, Ameri¬can Simone Biles, put in an outstanding perfor-mance to win gold with a score of 15.966. To go where no Indian had gone before is a story in itself, and no one can begrudge Dipa her result. There was good news to come out of the Riocentro, where Kidambi Srikanth beat Sweden's Henri Hurskainen 21-6, 21-18 in 34 minutes to enter the pre-quarters of the badminton men's singles event and PV Sindhu overcame Michelle Li of Canada 19-21, 21-15, 21-17 in a grueling 72-minute match to join her compatriot.

Kosovo’s first Olympics winner returns to hero’s welcome
Reuters, Pristina, Kosovo: | Updated: Aug 15, 2016 12:49 IST
Thousands lined the streets of Kosovo’s capital on Sunday to give a hero’s welcome to judo champion Majlinda Kelmendi as she arrived home after winning a gold medal in Rio 2016, the first Olympic games in which the small Balkan country took part.

Twenty-five year-old Kelmendi won gold last Sunday in the 52kg category, making history for the country of 1.8 million people which became independent in 2008.

“When she won I cried like a baby. That was the best moment of my life since we declared independence,” said Emin Krasniqi, 62, as the bus carrying Kelmendi drove by.

“It still looks as a dream,” Kelmendi told reporters after walking on the red carpet rolled out for her at Pristina’s airport, where she was welcomed by Prime Minister Isa Mustafa. “All the hard work and sacrifice I made, I did them for my country and my people,” Kelmendi said, adding that she plans to participate in the next two Olympics. Many sports officials in Kosovo are calling on the government to declare judo a sport of national interest. Kelmendi will get 100,000 euros ($112,000) from the government for winning the gold medal as Kosovo, one of Europe’s poorest countries, has said it would reward all medal winners.

In this horoscope, it is the dasha of the third lord, Moon and Indians will achieve something in different tournaments in the world. India has beaten a weak West Indies cricket team in the test series in West Indies. But the antardasha is that of Mars in the second house with no connection with the third house at all. In our cricket mad country, we could call it a big achievement as successes only our achievements in cricket is what we must remember. In the dashamansha the third lord, Venus is placed in the eighth house, though its own house aspect by the fifth lord, Moon and the lagna and the tenth lord Jupiter hardly promising any great achievement in sports.

But ask your children to play games participate in various sports for the sheer joy of the game, not for prizes. But their priority should be their education and professional career which is better always.

Chinese diver asked to take plunge again as boyfriend proposes on Rio podium
Guardian sport - Monday 15 August 2016 09.21 BST Last modified on Monday 15 August 2016 09.32 BST

For most athletes, simply winning a silver medal for diving at the Olympics would be an overwhelming experience but China’s He Zi was asked to take the plunge again when her boyfriend proposed to her while she was still on the podium.

Zi, 25, who had just finished second in Sunday’s three-meter springboard event, covered her mouth in shock when her fellow Olympic diver Qin Kai materialized at the medal ceremony, bent down on one knee and offered up the box containing the engagement ring. Unfazed by the experience, Qin adroitly placed the ring on her finger and gave a thumbs up to the watching global TV audience.

“We’ve been dating for over six years,” Zi said. “I didn’t know that he would propose today, and I didn’t expect that I would marry myself out so early.
“He said a lot of things there at the podium. He made a lot of promises, but the thing that has touched me the most is that I think this is the guy I can trust for the rest of my life.”

Qin Kai follows up with a red rose encased in glass. She said she had had her suspicions during the day: “I saw him during the afternoon and he seemed to be memorizing something, so I asked him: ‘What are you doing?’ and he said he was singing.” Qin, 30, a bronze medalist in the men’s synchronized three-meter springboard, also gave his now-fiancee a red rose encased in glass.

It was the second engagement to take place at the Rio Games following that of the Brazilian rugby sevens player Isadora Cerullo who tied a gold ribbon around the finger of her girlfriend Marjorie Enya last week.
